Indian tutors teach mathematics online to UK kids
If UK grannies can use Skype to teach Indian children — as we covered earlier this year — then it stands to reason that Indian tutors could teach UK children as well. Lo and behold, when it comes to mathematics — an area of chronic teacher shortage in the UK — Bright Spark Education is using Indian teachers trained in the UK curriculum to help British students aged 7 to 16 learn what they need to know.

What is the University of the future?

At the Guardian’s People’s panel of last week, (I was in Holland last week so I could not post) we have some nice suggestion of what would look like university system of the future. In a few point it is summarized:

  • Debate would be encouraged in all forms
  • The future revolves around harnessing technologies
  • The ideal university teaches students to practice the good life for a sustainable future

Nice quotes:

Our word for schools comes from schole, meaning “leisure” – this etymology alone justifies a radical rethink of our university system. You might work to feed yourself, however that is not why you learn. You learn to have something worthwhile to feed. Universities should be everything the marketplace is not.

[…]

As a lecturer, I don’t doubt that the future’s bright and revolves around harnessing technologies. It reduces the staff and student carbon footprint by cutting the need to be physically present and students can use their home patch as a test bed for assignments, which in turn can improve the places they live in.
